Jess Bugg

Jess Bugg is a writer and artist based in Austin, TX. She blends her passion for ecology and animal rights with a love of storytelling. Bugg received her BA in visual communication from the Savannah College of Art and Design with concentrations in photography and writing. She received her MA in nature-culture-sustainability studies from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is trained in classical Pilates and teaches with a focus on chronic illness and rehabilitation.

Hope Bohanec

Hope Bohanec has been active in animal protection and environmental activism for thirty years and has published the book The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat? She is the Executive Director of Compassionate Living and the host of the Hope for the Animals Podcast. Hope co-founded the Humane Hoax Project, the Ahimsa Living Project, and has organized numerous online and in-person events including the Humane Hoax Online Conference, the Humane Hoax Chicken Webinar, and the Sonoma County VegFest. Over the last three decades, Hope has worked for the national non-profits United Poultry Concerns and In Defense of Animals and has contributed chapters to two anthologies.

Verena Brunschweiger

Verena Brunschweiger is an author, passionate childfree activist, and feminist. She was born in Passau, Germany, in 1980. She studied German, English, and Philosophy at Regensburg University, receiving her PhD in 2007 and teaches at a Bavarian grammar school. She is a most passionate member of Theater Regensburg’s extra choir, performing in several operas by Verdi, Wagner, and Bizet. She still accompanies her favorite professional basso on the piano. Reading books in any of the five languages she speaks is another great passion of hers.

Irene Blasco

Irene Blasco is a Spanish illustrator, designer, and painter based in Valencia, Spain. Taking an intuitive approach, she primarily works with digital techniques in a versatile style that accentuates her use of color. She loves photography and since 2010 has taught art workshops for children. Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards as the Bologna Ragazzi Digital Award in 2013 for her interactive storybook Rita the Lizard. Irene is also the winner of the LIBER 2021 Illustration Award.

Aryenish Birdie

Aryenish Birdie is the founder and executive director of Encompass. Prior to Encompass, Aryenish worked at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine promoting alternatives to animal tests. In addition to her more than two decades in animal protection, Aryenish has worked in other social justice movements, including those striving for racial justice, queer liberation, and reproductive freedom.

Soraya Beheshti

Soraya Beheshti has worked for several years with refugees across the Middle East and Asia. She is the CEO and founder of Karvan, a non-profit organization that leverages innovative Blockchain technology to improve the lives of refugees around the world. Karvan was a recipient of the Columbia University Innovation Grant and was a semi-finalist for the Tech.Co Startup of the Year competition and the 2018 Hult Prize, the world’s largest social venture competition. She currently runs the Middle East and North Africa operations for Crimson Education, a US/UK university admissions support consultancy, from her base in Dubai.

Peter Brandt

Peter Brandt is the Senior Attorney for Farm Animals at the nation’s largest animal protection organization, the HSUS. In 2017, he was a Farm Animal Law and Policy Fellow with Harvard Law School’s Animal Law & Policy Program. As an adjunct professor, he has taught classes on farm animal law and policy at Lewis & Clark’s Northwestern School of Law. His writings on animal protection have been published in the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Examiner, and Salon.
